What do you think should be the fair price of a home defibrillator (AED)?

Assuming you would want to acquire a home defibrillator but you find that the current price is too high (1000$). What do you think would be a fair price i.e. a price at which you would definitly buy the device

They're not cheap! My brother sells them for about $2000. This is a standard unit that is usually place in a public place. I have yet to hear of people purchasing for the home. If you found one for $1000, it's a steal!

current electronics:$1000+; defibrillation when you need it:priceless

Let me preface my answer by saying my wife is a critical care paramedic that runs a hospital-based ambulance service, and I used to be an EMT. So there is some knowledge and experience behind this response.

Unless I knew I was diagnosed with a heart condition that could result in needing an AED in my home, I would never buy one.

Unless you have some cardiac condition that makes you prone to either ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachicardia, then an AED will likely not save your life if you suffer a heart attack. An AED only shocks two arhythmias, ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachicardia. Most victims of heart attacks suffer much earlier symptoms before those two arhythmias occur since they are late stage arhythmias that immediately preceed death after a great deal of damage has been done to the heart. Survival rate for persons that are actually shocked by an AED is very low. Yes, they increase the survival rate by about 49%. That means you have a survival rate of about 6% if you suffer the arhythmia that an AED will shock over the around 4% survival rate that CPR alone provides.

The greatest killer of heart attack victims is failure to either call an ambulance or go to the hospital at the first sign of trouble. My wife has lost count of the number of times that people are either picked up by the ambulance or come into the ER that start by saying something along the lines of "I started having some slight chest pain yesterday" or "Lately whenever I do anything I get winded and tired in a matter of minutes." Those same people are almost always found to be having an active heart attack, suffered a heart attack in the last few days, or on the verge of a heart attack.

The sad part is for those that have already suffered the heart attack or are suffering one is that if they would have come into the ER at the first sign of trouble, the damage to their heart could have been prevented or minimized. Heart damage is not reversible.

So unless your doctor recommends you own an AED because of a diagnosed heart condition, spend your money on regular check ups and taking care of your heart rather than on an AED.

I'm surprised they're so CHEAP! Do you have any idea how much product liability insurance they need on a thing like that? At $1,000, it's something drunk fratboys could actually get one.

If I have reason to believe that I need one, I'll buy one for even higher than 1000 dollars. You can't put a price on your life.
