What is limiting people to buy defibrillators (AED) for home? |
I am trying to find out why people do not buy defibrillators for their home. Clearly it would help save many life. Could it be the price (currently +/- 1000$) or the lack of awarness or any other reason that I do not know Cost is big. Common sense is another; seems like the odds are better you would kill someone you love instead of saving them. Electroshock just doesn't seem to be a thing that should be placed in the hands of non-professionals based on a lesson or 2 if even that training. I think as they still cost a couple of grand, most people spring for a plasma TV if they have that kind of money to burn. I think it is a combination of both. The price vs. training and the fact that people just don't think they are needed. Price definitely Currently, AEDs are not covered by insurance for most people. A new trend is that for some heart patients, insurance is beginning to pay for AEDs, but they are still few and far between. If a defibrillator is available for home use that means everyone is a nurse or a doctor. Even nurses and doctors do not have one at home. You should be trained when to give electric shocks to people. It should not be given haphazardly. I wouldn't want someone to deliver a shock on me who doesn't have a clue why. It also cost a lot and definitely not child proof. You don't want to see your child shocking his/her playmate right? Horrid. |
