AED drills in schools?

Does anyone have a good AED drill for schools- as specific as possible? Thanks. What about feedback from administrators and staff?

As a CPR instructor, I believe everyone should have CPR training and know where your school's AED is located and be familiar with it;s operation as there are several different brands and features. The AHA has a great program called CPR in Schools. you can contact them at www.americanheart.org.

Your local EMS service should be more than willing to help you with this - from setup to demonstration to drilling.

Red Cross, local EMS or Fire Dept would help. The only problem with AEDs and training is that the CPR and defib standards have/are in the process of changing nationwide and the AED's need to be reprogramed to these new guidelines. The basics of AED ops, however, can easily be learned, even with minimal or no training.

On a side note, the song "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen (as ironic or morbid as this sounds) is a good tool to learn how quickly compressions in CPR should be performed on a pulseless patient. Seriously! Try it! Play the song and at the same time do compressions on a table or bed to that beat for two minutes to gain an appreciation for the physical stress of doing CPR. We (I) actually did this in paramedic class when refreshing our CPR skills.

Well at the high school i used to go to, what we did first is just have someone collapse in the cafeteria and observed what everyone did. It's interesting what you find. Work from there. Someone ran to the nurse, other kids were like "you ok", others laughed and pointed....it's crazy. In the weeks/days before, you should raise awarness about it and what to do if...then, have someone, a teacher, student, visitor grab their chest and colapse somewhere where the people you want to drill will be, and make sure the availible tools, ie the AED is readily availible, and help direct them on what to do, but make sure someone is there, or the pt makes them aware that it is a drill and/or that 911 is not called as a real emergency.
