Is it ok to put aed electrodes on somebody likely to have heart arrest ahead of time?

let's assume there are symptoms of heart attack (chest pains, etc) and you called ambulance. The victim is conscious still but may very well have heart arrest in a minute or two.

is this ok to put aed electrodes on that person just in cast ahead of time and switch aed to start tests before ambulance arrives ? if not what is the risk ? will aed advise shock for someone without heart arrest ?

There is no reason why not. the AED will only shock a 'shockable 'rythm, IE VF or VT.

The machine doesnt perform the shock anyway, you have to press the button.

That is the safety net. You only use the defib if you are trained and competent to do so. You never shock a concious patient or one with a pulse, so there should be no danger.

However if your protocols for whatever organisation you volunteer or work for are to not apply the pads, then dont. Always follow your training!

What do the instructions on the AED tell you to do??
How about your textbook, or your instructor? What do they say?
Follow directions and learn what the correct answer is.

Yes, you can put the AED pads on them. It'll analyze the rhythm and it'll tell you whether or not a shock is advised. If not, then there will be no shock. It's actually a good way to see if someone is having a dysfunctional heart rhythm that could be easily fixed with a shock before they have a heart attack and end up in asystole. No matter what, you can't shock dead.

Yes

Yes you can place the electrodes on the person. Second off just because someone has a heart attack does not mean they will go into cardiac arrest. All the AED does is look to see if the person is in a shockable cardiac rhythm, (V-fib, V-Tach) and give you the option to shock if they are. No the AED should not give you the option to shock if they do not need it. But use common sense at the same time if the person is awake and talking to you, you do not want to shock them.

yes you can.. it will anaylize the rhythm.. it will not give a shock when it does not have to..

It is not ok to shock somebody because they may have a heart attack, wait for the ambulance or paramedic to arrive they are trained and know what they are doing.

Always remember fibrillates can stop or interrupt heart rhythm, possibly the thing is to get them to have soluble aspirin to start thinning the blood making the platelets less sticky

AEDs are foolproof these days, just explain what you are doing to the patient and tell them its just a precaution.
Also on the other hand if you are a first responder do you know what you are looking for ie,The rate,The rhythm,Is it regular or irregular etc I could go on,After AEDs as a paramedic we would go on to Manual Defibs which is a whole new ball game.
In saying that if you stick to the protocols you wont go far wrong,Have confidence in your skills and you may find that this transmits to the patient easing their worries. If you are a first responder or hope to take this up as a career then I wish you good luck.

35 yrs ret paramedic.
