Omron home digital blood pressure monitor versus GP's blood pressure monitor?

My mum is on 10mg a day of Amlodipine. Every time she goes to see her GP, her blood pressure is high about 165/90, but when she gets home and monitors it herself, it's always normal between 111-131/70-80. She has a pulse rate of around 90-95. What I'd like to know is, are these home monitors reliable? If so, why is her BP high when she sees her doctor, but not when at home?

This is most likely white coat syndrome, your Mums bp goes up when she is visiting the doctor as she is anxious about the visit. Next time she goes, have her take her own bp monitor with her and ask the gp to check her with both. that way you will know either way, she may also be misplacing the cuff at home and getting an inaccurate reading. I got my bp monitor from Lloyds pharmacy, it cost a tenner and is completely accurate.

I think they call it the white coat syndrome. Meaning that whenever she is in the doctors office she might be a little nervous and it might be a little bit more stressful and it is normal to be a little higher there. Some home blood pressure monitors are reliable, some are not, the best thing to do is for your mom to take her blood pressure monitor into the doctor's office and see if it gets the same reading as hers.

You can calibrate the monitor on the back or the GP's monitor could be out? Omron monitors are good & lots of GP's actually use them.

stress can cause this - such as seeing the doctor. some automatic BP machinesw need re-calibration every 6 or 12 months. Manuals BP checks slighly more acurate. May need to take monitor in and get Dr to do manual and automatic.

the doctors use the old method my Dr has both on his desk but when i asked him he said he preferred to use the old pump up one as it was more reliable the digital one would prob differ from his as they work differently, keep a daily check on your mums digital one and if it differs lots from day to day you will know her pressure is up ,some people just by sitting in the doctors waiting room will put there pressure up its stress full.
