Blood Pressure Monitor...?

this might sound kind of stupid but... whats the little button on a normal blood pressure monitor that says DIA. sand underneath mmHg and another one SYS. and underneath mmHg... what do they show you? theres another one that says pulse and i know what that is but what about the other two? what do they mean?? oh and by the way its for my grandma....

also, what does the recall button do?

DIA is for diastolic, SYS is for systolic. Diastolic pressure is read when the heart is relaxed, and the heart cavities are dilated. Systolic pressure is read when the heart muscle is contracted and the cavities are compressed. Another way to look at it is diastolic is the lower of the two numbers, systolic is the higher.

mmHg is millimeters of mercury. That's an indication of the amount of pressure: mercury rising in a glass tube by a certain amount (in millimeters) when pressure is applied.

So, if a reading of 120/80 means that your blood pressure shows 120 millimeters of mercury during the systole (systolic part of the hearbeat) and 80 millimeters of mercury during the diastole (diastolic part of the heartbeat).

DIA means diastolic blood pressure, which is the lower reading. It refers to the blood pressure when the radial artery is relaxed. SYS means systolic blood pressure. It refers to the blood pressure when the radial artery is compressed. mmHg means millimeters of mercury, referring to the pressure units measuring blood pressure. Years ago, a mercury manometer was used to measure BP, but today it's done electronically but same units are used. Home measurement is very accurate if you have a high quality machine and have it calibrated every 2 years by the vendor. I use a Homedics brand from Walgreens and take it monthly first thing in the morning.

and the pressure is measured as the hig over the low
as example we say 120 ove 80, mean systolic 120 and diastolic 80 , is that clear to you.
in some machines you can adjust the alarm limits.
