In blood transfusion, blood is drawn from a vein rather than an artery. why?

sure, arteries can be punctured too (eg in heart valve surgery or removal of coronary embolisms)- since that is the best way of getting access. but there is no point in taking more risks that necessary

When running an IV you want to run at least an 18 guage needle. If you puncture an artery this is going to cause damage to tissue and the artery plus arteries are under tremedous pressure. A vein however is not, you will never see blood spurt from a vein. Veins are much closer to the surface than arteries too.
