Transfusion of HIV through blood?

If a person is hiv+ and does not know about it, especially in the first 3 months of contracting it and if this person donates blood will the blood report show that he is hiv+ or will blood transfusion take place and someone else can contract it ?

After blood has been drawn, it is tested for ABO group (blood type) and Rh type (positive or negative), as well as for any unexpected red blood cell antibodies that may cause problems in a recipient.

Screening tests also are performed for evidence of donor infection with hepatitis B and C viruses, human immunodeficiency viruses HIV-1 and HIV-2, human T-lymphotropic viruses HTLV-I and HTLV-II, and syphilis.

The FDA is allowing national deployment of investigational nucleic acid amplification tests (NAT) to screen blood for West Nile virus (WNV) genetic material -- an approach similar to that taken for NAT to detect HIV and HCV.

The specific tests currently performed are listed below:

Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)
Hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc)
Hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV)
HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibody (anti-HIV-1 and anti-HIV-2)
HTLV-I and HTLV-II antibody (anti-HTLV-I and anti-HTLV-II)
Serologic test for syphilis
Nucleic acid amplification testing (NAT) for HIV-1 and HCV
NAT for WNV

The chance of contracting the virus that causes AIDS through a blood transfusion is 1 in 1.5 million.

Blood is screened for that now. You may get as far as donating the blood but it will never be used.

Both answers are correct.

Yes, it will. The person is a carrier and must NOT give blood.

If there is any sign that the blood is tainted, it will be disposed of, and it won't be transfuse to another person.

Between when it is donated and it is transfused, it has been through the mill, so to speak. HIV is very stringently screened for, and the odds are extremely low that they would miss it and transfuse a unit of blood that is HIV+. That was a bigger problem in the 1980s prior to the screening methods they use today.

In NYC, at least, all blood and blood products are assigned a number that is anonymous. Then, it is tested for all sorts of things, including HIV. If it comes back positive, you will be notified and offered counseling. It is possible that your name would then go into a database.

Good luck

Please see the webpage for more details on Blood donation.

A couple of things.

One, the tests, though much better than in the past, are by no means foolproof. Even in established HIV, there is a small proportion of false negatives.

Second, while the theoretical transmission rate via blood transfusion may be numerically low, the consequences of acquiring HIV are obviously devastating.

Anyone who engages in high risk behavior, such as IV drug use or unprotected intercourse or other "exchange of bodily fluids" (hetero or homosexual) has to be smart enough to realize that they are a possible carrier of HIV (as well as other problems). Don't fool yourself by thinking that if you don't engage in unprotected anal intercourse that you are safe. There is a demonstrated rate of infection in ALL forms of sex that involves unprotected contact. It is incumbent upon those folks to be responsible, intelligent adults and not try to donate blood. If we could be really sure that the blood wasn't infected, it would be fine, but we can't be and I'm not sure we ever will.

yes. If blood of a HIV pos person is transfused, other person
may get the infection.
