Why do I have a difficult time breathing when lying down?

I have been told and tested to have sleep apnea in which I have a cpap machine at home. I stop using it cuz the pressure made a blood vessel in my eye erupt. For days I would see blurry as if I had no glasses on. But lately I had been having some hard times breathing when I lay down and I don鈥檛 know why. The best way for me to lay down on my stomach and sleep. I have a inhaler that I use cuz I had ammonia last year in one lung that they believe started my asthma. Please help don鈥檛 know what to do and what kind of doctor to see.

Never ever in my career have i seen a CPAP cause a patients blood vessels to pop. Possibly the mask wasn't fitting right or the pressure or altitude wasn't right. Are you overweight? That could make it hard to breathe lying down. You NEED to use the CPAP thats the key to being able to breathe. Trust me!! See a Pulmonologist, most likely the doctor that prescribed the CPAP.

You obviously have an inkling that your difficulty in breathing when you lie down is related to your sleep apnea, and it almost certainly is.

Sleep apnea means that when you relax or sleep, especially on your back, your throat muscles are relaxing too much and cutting off your air. When it's severe, it can also happen somewhat while you are awake.

You need to be treated for sleep apnea. If you leave it untreated, you increase your risk of high blood pressure and having a stroke, not to mention you probably feel very tired all day.

Your CPAP machine couldn't have ruptured a blood vessel in your eye, but high blood pressure would. CPAP is the gold standard in sleep apnea treatment. Unless a doctor told you to stop using your CPAP machine, start using it again. You should also see your GP or family doctor to check your blood pressure and be checked for glaucoma.

If you are having serious trouble getting used to the CPAP machine, try talking to a sleep physician about your other treatment options.
