I need to know some information on child hood sleep apnea. also find a doctor that deals with it.?

i have a neice that has sleep apnea and she doesn't want to use the cpap machine. what can we do.

1. There are basically 2 types of surgeries. (actually more, but they all fall into 2 catagories)....the throat and nose surgury.

2. MAKE SURE that you KNOW which one she needs FIRST!!!!!! If you are not SURE get multiple opinions FIRST.

3. My doctor gave me the nose operation first, but he misdiagnosed me, and now I have to do the throat surgery. I think he misdiagnosed me intentionally because I SPECIFICALLY said that something like a "flap" keeps blocking my breathing. He should have known the it was the tissue that hangs in my throat because I T'OLD him that it blocks when I sleep on my back....PLUS I took the sleep study which is really a waste of $4000 bucks.

4. Find out FIRST what the symptoms are.... ie, (does she have apnea after a hard day? does she have it when she sleeps on her side or back, etc) If you can do some monitoring and get the FACTS, you will save $4000 for the sleep study. Once you get the facts, ask around and find out what worked for other people with those symptoms.

Yes, the fact finding is a hassel and could take time to gather the facts, but it's definitely better than paying $4000 for a sleep study which did me NO GOOD! The throat operation only cost about $2000 anyway, so I would have been better off taking my chances and just doing the throat operation without the study.

Here is some good information on apnea. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sleep-a...

If you want to write me for more info, feel free to contact me....but really, all I can says is: 1- do not be lazy. Find out the symptoms first, BEFORE doing the surgery. 2- Get multiple opinions on which surgery she needs. 3- Ask around on which surgery worked for your niece's symptoms. This may take some time to find others who have had the exact same symptoms, but there ARE others who did. So do your homework as you are right now.

my email is uuuthe@yahoo.com - put "sleep apnea" in the heading if you decide to write so I don't delete your mail. Take care, and best wishes!

PLEASE USE WHATEVER DEVICE OR SURGERY THAT IS PRESCRIBED BY A DOCTOR OF MEDICINE AND NOT BY US IN THIS! APNEA IS NOT CURED ALWAYS BY SURGERY! SEE A DOCTOR AND DO WHAT HE SAYS PERIOD! Report It

SEE WHEN YOU STOP BREATHING IT CAN BE FROM NEUROLOGICAL CAUSES, NOT PHYSICAL! THIS CAN BE DIAGNOSED IN A SLEEP LAB! FOLLOW WHATEVER THE DOCTOR PRESCRIBES, MAKE YOUR NIECE USE THE DEVICE IF IT WAS PRESCRIBED IT IS NOT AN OPTION ! Report It

ok - find a hospital that does sleep studies. they typically do not put kids on cpaps. they tend to remove whatever is causing the obstruction - tonsils, adnoids...
i have been treated for apnea - and did you know that sids is basically sleep apnea in kids - they do not have the physiological jerk response to wake them up when they stop breathing. they just don't breathe and they die. i would take this child to a specialist immediately! good luck...but i am fairly sure no cpap will be needed because kids just do not tolerate them well. alot of adults don't!

YOU KNOW I AM 61 YEARS OLD AND AT 60 I HAD TO BE FORCED TO GO TO THE SLEEP LAB BY MY LOVING WIFE BECAUSE I WAS A HARD HEADED STUBBORN FOOL IN DENIAL, I IN FACT DID NOT WANT TO USE THE DAMN MACHINE MYSELF AND I, THOUGH I ACTED AS A CHILD, WAS A GROWN ADULT! MY WIFE ONLY WANTED TO SAVE MY LIFE, SHE SIMPLY LOVED ME AND DESIRED THAT I SHOULD CONTINUE TO LIVE WITH HER!

THERE IS NO SUBSTITUE FOR THE CPAP MACHINE. IT IS A PRESCRIBED THING, JUST LIKE A SHOT, A PILL. DO YOU REFUSE TO TAKE PRESCRIBED MEDICATION? DO YOU LET YOUR CHILDREN REFUSE MEDICATION BECAUSE IT TASTES BAD? PERHAPS THE POLIO SHOT HURTS! OR THE TETANUS SHOT HURTS, DO YOUR KIDS TALK YOU OUT OF IT? I REALL DO NOT THINK THAT THEIR OPINIONS COUNT MUCH!

THE CPAP DEVICE IS NOT AN OPTIONAL DEVICE! IT IS MEANT SIMPLY TO SAVE ONES LIFE! RECENTLY A NATIONAL FIGURE DIED OF SLEEP APNEA, SIMPLY WENT TO SLEEP AND NEVER WOKE UP!

THE CPAP MACHINE TAKES AROUND TWO TO THREE WEEKS TO GET USED TO. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF DIFFERENT OF FACE AND NOSE PIECES TO SUIT EVERYONE! IT IS IMPORTANT TO USE THE MACHINE, IT IS NOT OPTIONAL, SLEEP APNEA IS NOT SOMETHING THAT CAN ALWAYS BE CLEARED BY AN OPERATION, IT IS FREQUENTLY SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE BRAIN FUNCTION!

GET HER TO USE THE MACHINE IT WILL IMPROVE HER OVERALL OUTLOOK ON LIFE! SHE MIGHT EVEN EVENTUALLY WANT TO TAKE IT WITH HER WHEN SHE GOES ON SLEEP OVERS WITH HER CLOSE FRIENDS. BUT A NIGHT WITHOUT HOPEFULLY WILL PROBABLY BE ALRIGHT, DUE TO SOCIAL PRESSURE!

SHE MUST USE THE MACHINE! IT IS NOT AN OPTION! MINE IMPROVED MY LIFE COMPLETELY AND GAVE ME BACK 20 YEARS!

GOOD LUCK!!!!
