Substitute for cpap filter.?

I have been on a cpap for several years and I love it. However, replacement parts, ie mask, filter, hose, are too expensive to replace even with just a co-pay. The cpap I'm using has a filter that looks very similar to the foam used in ac filters or weather stripping. Can I use one of these rather than put out money I dont have for a real one?

I use a Bipap apnea machine (which uses a similar little square filter). I haven't been using it long enough to know whether it can be substituted to what you are suggesting.
However, I know who can tell you.
