4 year old dental question?

My 4 year old little brother is said to have 8 cavities and he is going to need 2 root canals and 2 crowns along with the fillings. They are going to put him under while they fix his mouth. I was wondering if they have put even younger kids under before and everything was fine? I am afraid something might happen!

I don't want to hear the comments on doesn't anyone take care of his teeth, because we do. Myself and my other 2 brothers have NEVER had a cavity. We think it is because our doctor never prescribed any baby formula with flouride in it like he did for when me and my siblings were babies and he didn't prescribe vitamins for him either like he did for us. We brush his teeth 3 times a day. So please don't say we don't take care of him because we do.

They won't be able to do until December 15 and I feel sick all the time at school because I don't know if something serious can happen to him.

Yeah, I know that is what I said but they say it isn't a good idea to pull his teeth.

They say they need to do the crowns and the root canals because of the way the cavities have already eaten the tooth. This is one of the best dentists in our town. My dentist referred us to her because he doesn't have the equipment for the little kids. He has been referring people to her for 12 years.

I think it is great that you're so concerned about your brother. It is not uncommon for a 4 year old to have bad teeth. I used to work as an assistant in a pediatric dental office. The youngest child we had to do work on was about 2 years old. I have not seen anything go wrong in the 4 years that I have worked in the pediatric office. Sometimes children who do all the work..brushing, flossing, etc..get cavities. You mentioned that you brush his teeth 3 times a day, but what is he eating??? What we eat can affect our teeth. Sometimes fluoride and vitamins aren't enough. If the dentist that he will be seeing has been doing this a long time, trust that she will take good care of him. Your dentist wouldn't refer your brother to her if he didn't trust her. It's important that he have this work done. He will have most his baby teeth for at least another 4 years. You really don't want him to not have any teeth do you? It sounds like you really care about your brother a lot. Maybe you should talk to your parents about your concerns. They should be able to help ease your mind.

If you are having questions about your brother's treatment, go with him to see the dentist and talk to him about your concerns. Also, it might be a good idea to seek a second opinion from another dentist, since you have time before Dec 15.
I work in surgery, and we often have children in to have dental work done while they are under anesthesia. While there are risks (and you should talk to the dentist about these risks), it is generally a safe thing to do and your brother will be more comfortable during the procedure. He'll be well taken care of.
It sounds like you care about your brother alot, he's lucky to have a brother like you.
