Can I have my wisdom tooth extraction done in a hospital instead of a dental clinic?

I visited my dentist and have my tooth x-rayed. The dentist suggested me to have my wisdom tooth extracted there in his clinic. I understand for simple cases *as judged by the dentist, it can be done in a clinic, and only more complicated cases are referred to a hospital. However, i do feel safer having it done in a hospital because of more advanced equipment and experienced surgeon.

Can i request my dentist refer me to a hospital?
Can the dentist refuse to do so?

How do i know whether one's a 'oral surgeon' or just a 'dentist'?

I assume the ones i go to and have my tooth cleaned are dental clinics with 'dentists' but not 'oral surgeon' right?

A hospital would be ridiculously costly. They may even have less experience pulling wisdom teeth because very few people go to the hospital for that.

An oral surgeon that works in his own office is who you want to go to. I've had one wisdom tooth pulled by an oral surgeon and three pulled be a dentist. I would definitely recommend the oral surgeon. Much better work... Healed much faster... Novocaine is fine. None of them hurt at all. But, an oral surgeon can knock you out if you choose. Just costs more and you'll need a ride home... Cost was reasonable (similar to what a dentist would charge).

If your dentist won't refer you... ask friends. Many dentists always refer patients to oral surgeons for wisdom teeth and won't touch them themselves.

EDIT: Most oral surgeons work out of their own offices just like general dentists. It's just what they specialize in... not where they work. Very little dentistry is done in hospitals these days. Like I said... Many dentists will always refer you to one for wisdom teeth. Your dentist shouldn't be too offended if you ask. I'm sure someone you know has been referred to a good one in your area by their dentist. My dentist gave me a choice of two and one of them was also recommended by a co-worker, so the choice was easy.

I'm starting to remember more about it... Like I said, it didn't hurt at the dentist or the oral surgeon. With the dentist, there was some pulling and crunching though. He ripped up my gums pretty good around the tooth. At the oral surgeon... All I remember is him saying "OK... It's done". I was like... That's it??? That was an emergancy job. Left on a vacation right after I got out of there and it didn't bother me at all the whole trip.

You'll know who's who... A dentist is a dentist and an oral surgeon is an oral surgeon. Just like a familily doctor is a general practitioner and a surgeon is a surgeon. They'll be listed as an oral surgeon, it will say oral surgeon on the sign. They won't clean teeth, etc... They are much better equipped to safely handle anesthesia. They probably spend 90% of their work day pulling teeth for dentists that don't. You can't get much more experienced than that.

The hospital is the least hygienic place to perform surgery.
And no the dentist can not stop you from going to the hospital and allowing some other Dr. to do the surgery. It will probably cost you 3 to 4 times more in the hospital.
Also I would get a second opinion about having them removed. Aslo in large cities there are usually dental schools where you can get work done for free to less than 1/2 the normal cost.
