Is fat, bloated and blotchy Wilfred Brimley an appropriate spokesman for the diabetic supply community?

Isn't he representative of someone with eating habits that put one at risk of having diabetes? Wouldn't a healthy looking person better convey the image of someone who is serious about fighting diabetes?

I don't think you can blame Insulin for keeping weight on. The real reason is more likely a lack of self control.

You make a great point. They should be using someone who appears to be doing everything they can to control their condition.

I think his representation has more to do with the passion a person feels about a cause when it becomes personal and hits close to home, coupled with celebrity endorsement. Sure Halle Berry might be a better choice for the camera, but maybe she takes lousy care of her health, or doesn't have that urge to get out in the community, the way W. Brimley does.

You make a good point regarding his appearance. I think it's wrong to assume that because of his weight, he must have poor diabetes management though. Maybe he's doing everything right and can't shed the pounds. We don't know. Insulin makes it especially hard to lose weight.

Having him as a spokesperson doesn't appear to have hurt but actually has helped the company he represents so don't think it is a bad thing having him as their spokesperson.

maybe people will identify with him.

It is very difficult to lose weight when you are on insulin.
Personally I have put on 1 stone.....just by keeping my blood glucose at a good level.
I eat less now than when I wasn't a diabetic.
My skin has also gone blotchy.
Better to be kind about other people.
This world is obsessed by how we all look. It's sad.
