Weight lifting equipment question?

I have been lifting weights to build up strength in my arms as my Doctor suggested. Since last yule season under a Doctors care I have lost nearly 100 pounds. But I am having a problem now with my wrists. I am 50 and face it my joints aren't what they use to be. Would a sporting goods store have some type of support band or such for this type of thing? Are there any other types of equipment I should have to support my other joints? I walk or ride a stationary bike 30 minutes to 2 hours a day depending on how much extra time I have. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

A good pair of weightlifting gloves will help a lot---look for the kind with a wide velcro around the wrist. If that's not enough, there's an elastic "tape substitute" used under boxing gloves for bagwork that's sort of a stretch tube with a thumb hole . . . you can wear those, or a drugstore wrist supporter, under your weightlifting gloves if need be.

Also, look at your exercises AND the weights you're using. Tendons and ligaments gain strength much more slowly than muscles do, and I can tell you from personal experience, it's pretty easy for a new lifter to get ahead of what their wrists or elbows are structurally ready for. A lot of times, varying your routine, changing up your exercises, and going lower weight/higher reps will help.

Also, it's worth it to pay a trainer for at least one session, so they can critique your form. Your best remedy is doing the exercises VERY correctly.

Your can buy support braces and wraps at your local drug store. Also specialty orthopedic stores carry a wide variety of braces and supports. That would probably be better for you since they can help to fit you properly for what your looking for.
