Name brand prescriptions vs. generics?

if there is no difference in them then why do we have both? why do some dr.s say "make sure you dont get the generic of this one" and why hasnt the generics put the others out of business?

They have contracts with the drug companies.

Some people can't afford the brand name drugs....sometimes it's a matter of what the insurance company is willing to pay for.
The only difference is the name of the drug...it's compound is the same...

Very good question, if they are exactly the same--why would a doctor say that?? I have heard that too.
