Does anyone know what is the correct term for this near death phenomenon?

When my father-in-law experienced a major stroke, he was bed-ridden and almost drifting in and out of his consciouness most of the time. We kept him company at the hospital on 26 Dec, and that day, it surprised all of us to see him so alert, and he was even able to sit up on a chair. He even talked to us. After 2 hours or so, he later complained of tiredness, and went back to bed, slipped into a coma and passed away 3 days later.

I was told for people who are critically ill and dying, a few days before their death, it is a norm to be alert to the extent that deem recovery, but it is a prologue to actual death. There is a term for it in chinese that I know. Anyone know what is the term for this phenomenon in English?

It's refered to as a Near Death Experience.

That's the most technical term I know
