MRSA and babies?

I have a question about MRSA... my grandfather has MSRA bc he is bed ridden and been in and out of the hospital for 4 years ((in more than out)) and I dont let him have skin to skin contact with my 6 month old but my grandmother who cares for him does have contact with her does... is this bad? Im freaking out.. Can my daughter contract this from them? How would i know if she had it. Thanks!

Hi. Talk to your pediatrician. Anti-biotic may be needed.

MRSA is very contagious. I would say make sure that your grandmother is not wearing the same clothes she was wearing when she tended to your grandfather and that she cleans the surface of her skin before touching your baby.

yes. babies have low immunity. wash your hands frequently and use soap for 15 seconds before you rinse and you are safe for your baby. diarrhea is apparent and it has a smell and is yellowish.

I would question the diagnoses of MRSA for the past 4 years. If you are at all worried, contact you local hospital and ask them about "Contact Precautions". they will know what you are talking about.

Sorry to hear your grandfather is sick. MRSA in the skin (most common site) is not terribly contagious. If he has it in the lungs that's when you have to worry. In any case, your grandfather should be on vancomyacin.

So long as she doesn't touch where he has MRSA she is fine. You have to come in contact with the bacteria and have a port of entry to get it. Since your grandfather has it and it sounds like it is problably sores on his body have your grandma apply tea tree oil to these wounds to get rid of it. Also you are right to be cautious with your daughter around your grandfather but so long you wash well after contact and don't touch the actual wounds it should be ok for him to touch her.

Everyone has staph that lives on the skin, when you get a cut or open sore, it is potentially able to cause an infection but it is just there normally in all humans. There is this super bug, MRSA which is Methicillin Resistant Stapha Aureus ( a resisitant staph that lives on the skin) and it is becoming more and more common in all age groups. The only way your daughter could get it is if she gets a cut or sore and has contact with MRSA. If your grandfather has been treated, then he shouldn't be a risk to her. Just watch her for signs of red sores or infection if you are concerned. Otherwise, she should be just fine. You don't need to keep her from her grandfather if he has been treated. She has just as much risk of getting it while at the grocery store or outside in most places. It is becoming that common.

MRSA i s highlu contagous and if she touches him to take care of him then touches you daughter than you are running the risk of spreading it on to her, you should really speak to the DR,

I'm in the same situation. My father has been hospitalized with MRSA for the past week and I have a 2 year old. I was told that everyone must wash their hands after touching him as a precaution. No drinking out of the same cups, no using the same towels, no kissing, etc. Same way you stop yourself from getting a cold from someone else.
I was also told that alot of people already have MRSA, but it just lays dormant. Just keep your baby clean and insist that your grandmother wash her hands and lay off the slobbery kisses! That's all. Keep an eye out for cuts and scrapes on your baby. If he/she gets one, cover it with a bandaid asap! Keep watch for strange skin inflamation or pimples. If you're scared, take your child to the doc! Go to cdc.gov for all the info on MRSA. Hope this helps!
