Ultra sound mistake?????????????

when i was first pregnant i got an utra sound and was told i was only having one baby but had high hcg hormone levels. now at 5 months i am being told they think its twins!?i am being sent to a hospital tommorow for a more through check? has anyone ever had this happen? i was almost done stocking up on supplies for one baby!

This can happen, however it happens only rarely.

Usually a twin is easily seen on ultrasound - usually because there is a second heartbeat or perhaps too many limbs or heads!

Once in a while it can be missed.

On the other hand, it might be that you just have a high hcg level (or even wrong dates) and that you do not in fact have a twin.

A repeat ultrasound with a good look for a twin is a reasonable thing to do.

It happens more often that you'd think. My sister had twins, and she didn't know until they were born. One hid behind the other at every ultrasound she had, and their heart rates were the same, so an extra one was never detected. Best of luck to you, and if you are, get ready to buy all that stuff over again!

sometimes this does happen a second baby will not always show up on an ultrasound cause its hiding behind the other baby and it looks like you are just having one child

There are other things besides twin gestation that can cause elevated hCG. Still, getting a second U/S is the best place to start. If there's one baby and it looks healthy, amniocentesis might be worth considering.
