While hospital purchasing decisions often focus on the price paid for medical products, price-based negotiations are no longer sufficient for controlling supply costs. As a result, medical products purchasers are seeking additional cost savings opportunities that maintain margins without compromising clinical goals. This study, commissioned by HIDA and conducted by KPMG, examines purchasing patterns at twelve hospitals over over two hundred beds each to identify cost savings opportunities. The report identifies explores three potential areas of efficiency for hospital procurement and recommends four steps for hospitals to capture greater procurement cost savings.
