New dentist said root canal is infected to jaw bone..must perform surgury on root and tooth is this correct?

I recently moved out of state and i have extensive work i need done on my teeth, Iv had many root canals before. One of my teeth has a huge whole in it..its been killing for at least 8 months..i just idnt chew ont hat side or id be in excruciating pain. He said the infection spread to the nerve and to the jaw bone so he has to do surgury on it. He said i didnt need to take antibiotics...but if its that bad of an infection wouldnt i need to? He said that the root canal will clear it up on its own. Should I trust this doctor. Iv never heard of having surgury on my jaw because of a root canal...is it a common procedure.?

Be wary of having surgery to fix up an abscess. I assume he means an apicocectomy. The success rate is not wonderful in the hands of a general dentist. All conventional methods of RCT should be attempted first.
I would suggest at least a 2nd opinion, and preferably a referral to an RCT specialist (endodontist).

I have had one root canal but nothing as serious as yours.

a googl search turned up info i will include the link below.

seems like yoru dentist is doing the right thing if the infection has spread from the root to your gum /jaw tissue. be careful and ge this done ASAP. people can totallly lose jaws to this

i would think you would need to have the antibiotics--but he is probably talking about suctioning out the infection and scraping the bone(surgery). I think that I would call another dentist for emergency purposes. don't mention other dentist and see if he says same thing. don't put off getting this done because if it is what's wrong it is very serious, good luck
