Pneumonia....Professional answers...please!!!1?

my dad has been in ICU for about 4 days, due to pneumonia....he had a blood transfusion and also they placed an IV on his chest so that the antibiotic can go directly to lungs...but he's still the same...now they put his oxygen up...

It's very stressful

does he have a chance to survive?
or should we just take him off life support and let him go?

I'm not a doctor. So I can't give a professional opinion. But I can give you a logical one. It's only been 4 days. It's more than possible that he'll pull through. He still has brain function doesn't he? Trust me, he's fighting for his life. Give the man a chance.
Here's what happened to my aunt 2 years ago. They found her unconscious. She was in a coma. She wound up on life support. After two weeks they decided to take her off life support. The family was gathered around when they did it. All crying and consoling each other. Well guess what? All of a sudden she wakes up. She says, when can I go home? Imagine that?
She did die a couple of weeks later. But she came back to say goodbye to everyone. Food for thought.

Its hard to say. Depends on your fathers age and strenght. Usualy it can be treated

why a transfusion for pneumonia?
never heard of iv in chest for antibiotics to go to lungs?
maybe your confused....... or making this up.
also..... pneumonia isnt a terminal illness so you cant just pull the plug.
even with a living will in place it only applies if the illness is terminal.

If your only talking pneumonia, it takes a long time to recover from this. The only way I would probably take a loved one off life support would be terminal illness i.e. cancer. Or been diagnosed brain dead. Please, give him time, pneumonia can take weeks to months to clear. Don't give up on him.

It really would depend on your father's prior level of function and his past medical history in order to predict his prognosis....no offense but Yahoo answers is not the place to make a life/death decision especially about one of your parents

I suggest you talk to his doctor about his prognosis...that is the best person with that information

And, pneumonia is usually something that is self limited over time....for the average person it takes a couple of weeks to recover...it is a very nasty bug

your question is one that makes me feel sad for you , i understand your worries about your father.
i really dont think anyone on here should give you the answer because non of us are your fathers doctor.
i can tell you i have very bad asthma and have pneumonia more times then i can remember i too have been in the icu i think its over 6 or 7 times for sure and been in the hospitail with the problems i mentioned . as you can figure i am still alive
i think that if your father is aware and of clear mind that you should ask him about his wishes and have a non family member there in the room with you at tthe time as a witness . if possible
have him make a living will that is one that would explain what he would like to be done in situations when he is not able to speak for himself
right now you should ask who ever is the next of kin i would assume his wife what if anything more that they know about this matter. in addiion ask if you could be involved even if only to listen to the updates the doctor is giving the next of kin.
this i really belive is the best answer you can get from people doctors or not about your question.
one more thing is that you may want to pray for your father and yourself along with all the people involved in the matter
further to this make sure the hospitail is aware of his religion if any and if your dad would like to have a minister or other type of clergy come to see him .
i hope and pray this all works out for the best and that all of you have the strengh you need at this time.
one more thing about the tube into his lung i think that tube is there because he may have a partial or complety collasped lung
been there had that too .
some on here think this illness is not life threating but your right it is more so for someone who is at higher risk such as me with asthma or the elderly along with some others

you have to see for his quality of life insted of the quantty of life

Depending on his age and overall health, pneumonia is usually not a death sentence. If he is fairly young and is usually in good health I definitely would give him a chance. Although this is a decision that you, your family and your dad's doctor need to be discussing together. Good luck to you and your dad.
