Fever? complication after appendectomy? |
Hello, this is my first post here. my son who is 10 years old and always been very healthy had to have an appendectomy 2 weeks ago today which was the 13th. his appendix hadn't burtst but the dr said it was very close. he stayed in the hospital 2 nights getting antibiotics thru the iv and then has a script for amoxicillan that he finished up beginning of last week. The first few days he was home he didn't run a fever that i know of(was taking tylenol 3) . about 4 days after he was home he started running fever in the evening and night. not high tho maybe 100.2-100.4. he had a checkup with the surgeon last monday and he wasn't concerned about the fever at all, told me to quit taking his temp all the time. But it is still happening. today around 4pm it was 100.8 and i know that isn't high but i dont understand why he would have any fever at all. he has no cold symptoms or anything like that. I am very worried. i will take him to his dr. on monday but i am very worried right now.. please any ideas on what could be causing this. his incision area looks fine and is healed well... says his stomach will hurt every now and again tho..any ideas... He does act like he doesnt feel 100% and he's lost about 5lbs since the surgery! His fever is of course a natural way of fighting off infections (which I am sure you already know). I don't know how high your son's temp usually goes but that really doesn't sound too bad. I would say that after a surgery like that his natural defenses have to kick in to keep infection from taking over. Unless his fever starts skyrocketing I wouldn't worry too much just make sure he continues to drink plenty of fluids and gets plenty of rest. I hope he get's to feeling better soon. Good luck! You're possibly worrying too much, I know it's hard when it's your child but you need to relax. If your son isn't feeling unwell then he most likely is fine, would you be constantly checking his temp had he not had the op?2 weeks is plenty of time for anything wrong to show itself. take him ot the doctor and get his tummy checked. he may have a small hematoma that is causing his grief. Any fever with a post op status you should call the doctor. Its a sign of infection. You can always check with his primary care doc too...something is going on. Especially if his appendix didn't burst...you need to be sure. You are right to be concerned. When I was a surgical intern the saying was pus (infection) nowhere, pus (infection) somewhere, pus (infection) under the diaphragm (around the liver). I wouldn't let these doctors go until my son was without fever. Good luck! |
