Can a bee sting cause a fever?

My son suddenly experinced a fever (102F), pain in his back, headache, and nausea. We took him to his ped. who was concerned because of his symptoms. They did blood tests and cbc. All was normal except a high white blood cell count. They wanted to start an antibiotic IV, but decided to wait. We took him back this morning for more lab tests, but all blood work was normal, and no more fever. He received the bee sting about 12 hours before symptom onset, and all symptoms were gone within 24hrs. Could it have been caused by the bee sting?

Definitely. He is probably allergic to the sting.

When the allergy is triggered, histamines surround cells and cause them to inflame. The body releases more White blood cells, as it thinks there is an invasion, and it starts a fever. what clears the histamines is adrenaline, which is released from the adrenal glands, and it provides a small respite. You should consider getting an Epi-Pen, which has epinephrine, a type of synthetic adrenaline in greater quantities.

Your son might have an allergy to bee stings- that is, unless he has been stung before with no result. It seems to be a seemingly minor reaction; compared with some of my friends who are deathly allergic. My best advice would to have an allergy test performed; either with a blood test or scratch test. You might find some answers there! =)

Some people are very allergic to bee stings. In some cases, there person has to carry an epinephrine injector with them if there is a chance of being stung. Let the doctors run their test for they are suppose to be the experts on this. (Had your son said anything about being stung by a bee?) At least he is under medical attention.
