Advice on suspected burst abscess?

My mum had a heart bypass 4 months ago.

After the procedure, she contracted an infection in her leg wound (where they removed a vein for the bypass). After numerous antibiotics and IV, this seemed to start healing, though it is still some way off.

For the first 2 months, her chest wound (where the surgeon had split her sternum to perform the procedure) seemed to heal well. Only a slight scarring was visible.

After 2 months, her chest wound re-opened by about an inch and for 6 weeks, large quantities of green pus poured from the wound.

In the last 2 weeks, the pus has ceased, but this has been replaced by blood. Initially, she lost quite a lot of blood, though this has now slowed to more of a trickle.

For 6 weeks, her GP was at a loss and for the past 2 weeks, she has been in hospital, but they have also drawn a blank after a CT scan and blood tests.

They now hope it will sort itself out but I'm worried that the underlying problem remains or could re-occur.

Can anyone help?

ouch.

phone nhs direct for a second opinion.

And make sure she gets plenty of rest and doesnt smoke or drink.

It sounds like it is clearing up on its own. I'm no doctor but I know its a good thing that the pus has cleared. Strange to be followed by blood though. Hopefully it just needs more time for clotting. That's quite a large wound she had there. And if she's on any blood thinners, this will take longer. She may also have weaken immune system if she's been in poor health or has diabetes.
I'm so sorry that your mom is going through this. Try not to worry. She is lucky to have such a concerned son .
I'll be praying for you both.
God Bless
