Do you think I would be admitted to the hospital?

I'm 15 weeks pregnant. For the past week I've been having worsening chest congestion. Some times my cough is a little productive but mostly not. It feels like i could move some mucous but my cough doesn't. I have chest tightness and wheezing. When breathing I feel wheezing. I've been coughing so hard that my chest and abs hurt. I'm worried about the baby. My resting pulse is 110 or so. I have no energy. I went to the ER last night. The doc listened to breath sounds and said acute bronchitis and possible borderline pneumonia. No cultures or blood tests. He prescribed Zithromax. I think I need to check with my OBGYN. I'm 27 and this is my first baby. Last night my blood pressure was 141/something, and O2 Saturation was 98 %. I don't smoke and never had asthma or bronchitis. I feel worse today. Congestion feels worse and breathing in heavier. Do you think they'd put me in the hospital with IV antibiotics? I don't even have an appetite.

Melkel: Read the post again. I was at the ER last night. I saw my O2 Sat. I am an EMT and a smoker's Sat is much less. I'm not taking anything illegal. I'm not stupid, I'm pregnant. I've never been on the other end of care for pneumonia and wanted to know other's experiences.

Everyone else: Thank you for the advice. I will call my OBGYN in the morning, especially before taking the prescribed meds. I've had 2 ectopic pregnancies since June, I don't want to risk this baby. God Bless!

15 week pregnant, worsening chest congestion, wheezing, non-productive cough, chest tightness. HR 110, BP 141/? Sat 98% was placed on Zithromax, and after 6-18 hours, not feeling better, but worse....No appetite...

Hmmmmmm....definately some confusing signs and symptoms...
Being pregnant can cause some extreme symptoms or agravate some normal symptoms.
The ABX [Zithromax] really hasn't done much and really kicked in...yet....And you are still wheezing...I wonder why the doc didn't give you an MDI Albuterol or Combivent with a spacer? That would have opened up the airways a bit, given you a feeling that the doctor knew what he was doing, and you wouldn't be here asking questions that make me think that you are about to freak out. Some doctors are just stupid...or tired. Let's hope that this one was just tired and waiting to get off his shift after a long day of whiney complaining people and overlooked the obvious....

Look, go see your OBGYN Doc...Ask him if there isn't something for the wheezing, like albuterol or combivent MDI with a spacer. Tell him that you are gonna wait until tomorrow and if you don't feel better, you think that the zithromax ain't helping and you want to know if there are other things you can do....And the last, but not least thing you can do...get a room humidifer/fogger....at the local Rexall or Walmart pharmacy. Cost is $30-60. YOU need one currently, and if your child has croup, you are gonna need one for the child **IF** he get's croup. [And let the doc determine if he has croup, 'Kay????]

In the mean time, allow the abx to work, get a humidifer for the room, breath the mist deeply, and get an MDI inhaler with a spacer. And talk to your OB doc....

Okay?

Hope that helps abit...

Oh my god I'm so sorry, you seriously need to make a big appointment.

Check with your OBGYN you can never be to sure.

i would go in because it could affect your baby

sorry don't know but they are the professionals.

It sounds like you need to be in the hospital so probably. :( Hope you get better and the baby is OK!

Yea, they probobly will put you on them, but whatever it takes to save the baby!!!!!!!! If you are sick, so is the baby remember that, and go to the doctor immediatelyy....Don't wait, you are responsible to make sure that you and the baby are okay

You DEFINTELY need to go to the doctor again! I don't know if they'd admit you, but it sounds like you need to be looked at again. CAll your OB/GYN's answering service, they may tell you to go to or meet them at the hospital.

I am no doctor but they will probably tell you that the meds. will take a few days to work, maybe let you inhale the meds. they have on the wall.

if they think u had pneumonia then they wouldnt give u IV fluids... the aim is to reduce the amount of fluid no increase it. otherwise the pneumonia would get worse. But yes iw ould check with ur OBGYN. just to be safe. I dont think that they would send u home knowing that it could hurt ur baby.. or you for that matter. But there's no harm in gettin a second opinion.

Get with your regular Doc honey.

yes see another doctor, but try chicken soup, onion and thyme and ginger and cayenne, also taping garlic to the bottom of your foot so it can go through your system, get a steam vaporizer for the future with a vicks slot in it .

I would go back to the er again if i was you.

DEFINITELY check with your OBGYN. Did
the ER doc know you were pregnant? Did you tell him before he prescribed meds to you for your cough? See your OBGYN ASAP,just to be safe. You can't be too cautious when you're pregnant.

I think you need to calm down, that would help with your blood pressure and and pulse! I get bronchitis all the time, it sounds right. As long as you told the doctor at the er you were pregnant, and he gave you the z-pack anyways, just take it. You have a bacterial infection, that is why you feel like crap. You will feel better after 2 or 3 days. Just settle down. Call your OB and let him know whats going on if that will make you feel better. You just need to drink, rest, and take your medicine. You will be better soon. Good luck!

Please go back to the hospital. I have one child and have been pregnant more than the once - they thing with even bad insurance ( and that is what I have) is that if you have OBGYN maternity on your policy, the hospital will take care of you. I think it is much harder to get in as a non pregnant woman.
I dont know about zithromax and pregnancy but my head tells me no way would I touch it until my doc said ok and maybe not even then. Of course if you have full blown pneumonia, you have to take something and they will recommend that you do. I remember not being able to take cold medicine even when I was pregnant with my son but that was ten years ago.
I feel for you and you may need someone to go with you to the hospital to insist you get in immediately and get fully checked out. Our health care system is in an absolute state of emergency or else I would say you could handle it alone. Certain HMOs though will not admit past the ER unless you have a gun shot wound or are in cardiac arrest. I know this personally and I am not kidding in the least. If you are with an HMO you will need someone with you there to push them to get you past emergency care and into a room where doctors have time to look at you and keep you there for a while. This is what I would shoot for and ASAP if I were you....
Good luck to you and yours...

How do you know your stauration unless you have a machine at home because you have a known problem you are being treated for!
ALWAYS talk to your ob/gyn before taking any meds. As a matter of fact, go to your ob/gyn about everything.
PS 98% is a smokers saturation. Why are you worried about going into a hospital. You got half their equipment at home?
Are you taking something illegal? Are you worried you can't smoke when your admitted?
Is that YOUR zithromax or are you borrowing it and want an online drug check?
See your doctor if you want the right treatment. Its the only way to go. You can refuse hospital admmittence (I don't recommend it).

Sorry about getting it wrong, but I find that most of the time when people claim to have been prescribed something, and are worried about being bedded in a hospital and hooked up to IVs, their story is funk about ever having seen a doctor at all and they are actually med borrowing junkies having a anxiety trip, scared about getting caught with it in their system and arrested. But fear they have overdosed and now have to do SOMETHING like get real help. Like, my doctor gave me this, I'm pregnant and now I'm bleeding, what's going to happen, is it the meds fault. Should I see the doctor? Very suspicious.
Again, I apologise.
Don't be so anxious. Doctors are the worst patients. Lol.

Sometimes hospitals could be such a**holes. The only way they know a person is serious is if the patient gives them an attitude or if you go back several times. Listen, I've had the worst encounters with hospitals when I was pregnant. So much that I partly blame them for a previous miscarriage I had. If you have health insurance then go to the hospital if you are having any doubts about your health or your babies. Its against the law for them to turn you away. Insist that you want further testing done. You don't have anything to lose. If they give you an attitude give one right back and blame it on your hormones. Thats what I would do. Good Luck. I Hope everything will be OK.

Don't panic first of all. Your pulse and oxygen levels are just fine. Your blood pressure looks like it is slightly elevated, but blood pressure does tend to elevate when you are pregnant and also you were probably nervous and anxious and all worked up being in the ER. Give the Zithromax 48 hours and see how you start to feel. It is a very powerful antibiotic. Your symptoms may also be viral in which case the Zithromax won't do anything. I would call your OBGyn and tell her/him what happened definitely. See how you feel after 48 hours then reassess.
