Please help. Systemic staph with hands, feet, face swelling?

I have a loved one in the hospital to treat a large staph infection. They have her on an IV antibiotic for treatment. Does that mean that it is systemic? They have switched the type of antibiotic to another one today. They had her on mophine yesterday because of the surgery to remove the staph. She has a huge headache and now has swollen hands, feet and face. What the heck is going on? I am never around when the doctor is to ask questions.

Being on an IV antibiotic doesn't necessarily mean it is for a systemic infection, it's just that certain antibiotics can only be administered via IV. Others can be administered only orally (aka PO), while others may be given IV or PO. If she has an MRSA infection (methacillin resistant Staph aureus) and is on an IV antibiotic, it is most likely vancomycin. Morphine is a pain killer, not an antibiotic. Swelling could mean many things; it could be from the infection itself if she has skin and soft tissue infections, it could be that she is on a lot of IV fluids and is retaining water, or it could be an allergic reaction to the antibiotic or other medications she is on. Only the doctor can tell you for sure. The next time you are there, talk to the nurse and if they can't answer your questions, ask if you can meet with her doctor.
