Low WBC Count...need advice?

I have had many kidney surgeries this year and before every surgery, I had to get blood work done. In July, my wbc was 3.0 and in September is 3.3 and in November it was 3.3. I was a bit concerned but no one in the hospital said anything to me about it. But after I had my surgery in November, i got a bad UTI type infection and my wbc dropped to 1.9 and after many days in the hospital and IV antibiotics, a day later, my wbc was 4.9 (and my platelets were low but not sure how low). And in the hospital after my surgery in Sept., my wbc was 4.9 again. What is going on??? My family doctor talked to me a few weeks ago and without looking at all my tests, he thought the low wbc could be viral but why would my wbc shoot up in the hospital? Would antibiotics help even if it was viral? And can testing places vary with their counts?

They just don't look at the numbers, they look at the differentials between the numbers.

Take me for example :WBC's are at 16,000 (Considered too high) but my rbc's are also high with low hemoglobin.

This results in anemia, not deadly at all. It's just minor anemia that needs checking once a year.

Since you've had alot of kidney problems I'm not suprised that your wbc's are low with antibiotics and yes they do help in kidney problems. Most kidney problems are bacterial but some are viral. It's routine to administer antibiotics during kidney problems (I had this same situation when I was 19).

So I wouldn't worry too much unless the doctor says something is up because the differentials between rbc's and wbc's or in your wbc's the lymph or neu's are up. It is a problem yes but not a major problem. Your in good hands don't worry.
