Bad tooth pain, root canal? antibiotics?

i have had 10 fillings on each side of my mouth, a month ago! all my gums swell up and cause chronic pain to my jaw, ear and of cource my teeth. recently iv been getting migrains. im just asking for a second opinion, because now i dont trust my dentist judjement. he should have gone ahead and gave me a root canal before filling them. {they were rotton below the gumm line} but now he wants 800 dollars each tooth{for 8!}
has any one had experiance with absesed teeth or needing a root canal, antibiotics, etc?how is it supposed to feel for each of those?help!!!!!

I would surely get a second opinion. The root canal may not have been needed, and if it was, you are talking so much more money than for fillings. However, fillings should not cost 800 per tooth. That seems well beyond the reasonable cost. In addition, usually dentist will cut you a break with so many fillings (kind of like a bulk rate). If you are still having that much pain and swelling, you need to see another dentist right away. You many have a serious infection that requires antibiotics. To ease the pain in the meantime try warm salt water rinses and warm compresses. Make sure you see a dentist right away.

go get a second opinion at a dentist that someone you know uses. There are lots of dentists out there.

I think you're right. Either he didn't clean out the decay before or he didn't seal them properly and air/germs have gotten in now.

Not a good scene. Go to another dentist and find out what's up. If I were you, I'd also get his opinion in writing and go after the former dentist (threaten to sue him). At least, see if he'll give you your money back for the initial (bad) work without going to court. If he doesn't budge, see if you can get a lawyer to pick it up per diem. This sounds like a slam dunk case against a bad, money-grubbing dentist.

Usually your dentist will set up a payment plan when such extensive work is needed.

If your gums are swollen (and tender) then you most likely have an infection in the root. The doc will give you a strong dose of antibiotics to kill the infection (or as much as possible) and then will do the root canal. It's not painful - the numbing shots are the worse. And the smell of your tooth being drilled into - yuck! But take it from someone who was petrified of the dentist - it's well worth it!

The antibiotics don't hurt, they make the tenderness go away. But after you get the root canals, you will need to get them capped. Otherwise they will turn gray and brittle and will break.

You really should ask your dentist more questions!

You need antibiotics for sure if your tooth is absessed. Absesses can hurt a whole lot, the dentist needs to open up the tooth root pull out the nerve (i.e. drill into it) and let it drain for a couple weeks. Then they go back and fill in the hole and put a crown on usually. 800 sounds like a fair price and is not out of the question. That sucks to have 8 all at once... but I think if you have an absess untreated (no antibiotics) the infection can spread to surrounding teeth. I would call the better business bureau on this guy though because having treated the teeth only a month ago this shouldn't be happening. Sue for reimbursement for the fillings at least!!! Most likely what has happened is an absess spread. That really sucks, I've had teeth issues a lot in the past too and its the worst pain I've ever experienced. Your dentist should give you pain meds perscription if you have an absess... definitely ask for this.

Have you been back to your dentist to have your bite checked? The occlusion can be off from all those fillings and cause headaches. If you had extensive decay and large fillings placed, you could have some sensitivity. I worked in a dental office for many years and needing a bite adjustment after fillings is very common. If you have swelling you may need any antibiotic, and possibly one or more of the teeth will require a root canal due to the extensive decay.
Take aspirin or ibuprofen for the pain.
Hang in there!!

If it was a month ago, then you should not be in so much pain. If you don't trust your dentist's opinion, how can you trust them doin' stuff in your mouth?

You need an xray. Complain to the first Dr.
Go to a different Dr. Have him read that xray( they will have to call the old Dr. for it). Root canal is much more expensive. Better hope they were not that deep. Do you have fever? go soon if so.
