Can antibiotics alone get rid of an abcsess in the mouth?

I woke up on monday and all the rite side of my face is swollen i think its an absess iv got sum antibiotics but wil they work alone or wil i have to get it drained please help i look like a gerbil x

Use salt dissolved in warm water to rinse your mouth. This will help to kill bacteria, and speed up the healing process.

Should the abscess burst, you should use salt water again several times to rinse out the mouth.

yes they will go away eventually :-)

The antibiotics will treat the infection itself, but you will need
to get the gums/teeth treated to fix the cause of the infection
so it doesn't come back.

yes the antibiotics will get rid of the infection . dont worry it will go down but it takes a while for the antibiotics to start working.

i just had a abscess and the dentist gave me penicillin

This could be lack of some vitamins hence you have scuvvy. Get fresh tomatoes cut into 2 halves put a little amount of salt on it rub it into the tomato and use the tomato to wipe the inside of your mouth and tongue then throw the tomato away. Do this few times say 2-3 times in a day and the sore should reduce in a few days

MAYBE.

It is hard to answer your question because you haven't said whether or not you were prescribed the antibiotics FOR a dental abscess, or if the abscess is self diagnosed. I assume that maybe you haven't visited a health professional as you say "i think its an absess" and you could have asked your Dentist or GP the above question when presenting with this complaint.

Firstly, I must say that if this is the case, then get to a Dentist asap (or even get an appointment at your GP) - though preferably Dentist! As not all acute unilateral swellings of the face are abscesses, and there are several defferential diagnoses, so try not to self-diagnose/prescribe!

Systemic antibiotics alone MAY be able to get rid of an asbcess (this really depends upon the type/nature of the asbcess). You see, there may be some underlying cause for the abscess that could make it reccur if not treated by dental intervention - for instance by dental extraction or root canal treatment (one of these operative treatment options, possibly with drainage, is the preferred treatment option for dentists).

IF the antibiotics you have haven't been prescribed for this particular abscess then I must recommend you not to take them. This is because it is highly unlikely you have the correct type and course of antibiotic. Most dentists will restrain from prescribing antibiotics for an abscess because of the possibility of allergic reactions, toxicity, side effects and the development of resistant strains of microbes.

The usual course to treat a dental abscess is Oral Metronidazole (400mg) 2-3x/day for 5days or Oral Amoxicillin (250-500mg) 3x/day for 5days - though once again, one must stress to only take drugs for what they were originally prescribed, and in the correct dosage.

If you can't get to a dentist straight away, then may I recommend taking Paracetemol or Ibuprofen as an analgesic in the meantime.

should do but don't let it go on - it can be nasty if resistant and I lost two teeth in my teens and was very ill for a while (and oooh the pain!).

They can but many times especially if the swelling/abscess is big drainage is necessary.
But either way, you are treating the symptoms only, the abscess will re-occur if you don't treat the cause.

Ive just got over the same thing, now i have to have a extraction.Try taking painkillers and ibuprofen every other 3 hours but not at the same time,(6o'clock take two painkillers,9 o'clock take 1 ibuprofen and so on.don't take more then is on the packet.) This worked for me and within a few days it started to go down, try putting a bag of cold peas wrapped in a towel on the swollen face every hour for 10-20 Min's that will help will the swelling.
I know you're in pain but it will go down.
Get well soon.
