Does this sound more like a yeast infection or bacterial vaginitis?

before i had my period i had sort of a fishy scent, but not overpoweringly strong, hardly noticible. i figured it would go away. after my period ended i started to get white thick discharge, and the outside lips of my vagina have been getting red, irritated, ITCHY, and burn. I still have a small fishy odor.this is the first time with these symptoms and since im only 16 iv never been to the gyno. My mom bought me monistat 7 day treatment, but i couldnt stand it. it severly caused me to itch and become irritated inside. ( i also forgot to add that i just got off antibiotics.) i think a rational idea is to go to the gyno, but im too nervous. what do you think? also, what will the gyno do in my situation?

Only a doctor can tell for sure whether you have a yeast infection or bacterial infection or some other infection by taking a swab and run some tests.

Most of us can sometimes tell by the feel, look, and smell that you have a yeast infection. If your symptoms don't match this list, or you are confused or uncertain, go see your doctor if at all possible.

If it feels like an intense itching, burning sensation, localized in your vagina and vulva. This itching is not always present, but can get really bad, so bad you can hardly walk, let alone sit still or concentrate on anything.

If you think you might have a bacterial infection, or if you're not sure, get I would recommend going to see your doctor as this has to be treated with prescription antibiotics.

Urinary tract infections (UTI's) are due to bacteria infecting the urethra rather than the vagina. UTI's can be fairly easily distinguished from vaginal infections by a host of symptoms, including pain or burning when urinating, blood or mucus in urine, needing to urinate often, pain or pressure in back or lower abdomen and a fever or chills. If you think you might have a UTI, don't delay, go see your doctor, because the infection can travel up past the bladder, causing kidney damage.

Another type of infection called trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite that can infect both the vagina and the urinary tract, and is primarily sexually transmitted. If you have a trichomoniasis infection, your vagina can be itchy or painful, it can hurt to urinate, intercourse can be painful, and occasionally you can experience pain in your lower abdomen. Again, you have to see a doctor to get antibiotics to treat this.

I would recommend you see your doctor just to rule out any other infections and to get a proper diagnosis and proper treatment.

i think its time to see the gyno for the first time sweetie!

Antibiotics can cause a woman to get an itchy discharge but you should get checked out just in case by a gynecologist.

its probably yeast infection and you need prescription cream to get rid of it.
Antibiotics kill good bacteria along with the bad one and thats how you get yeast infections. Eat at least one yogurt a day - it has probiotics.

Antibiotics kill bacteria, an therefore upsets the normal flora/ environment of the vagina. In other words, it kills the good bacteria, and there are good ones that live in the vagina. It is possible that you have bacterial vaginosis since monistat 7 did not work. The 7 day treatment usually kills it dead, however, you may have a different strain, bit not to worry.. its harmless. Since you discribed a fishy smell, i mor likely think its B.V. Good luck, and dont worry, the doc will give you a suppository similar to that of monistat 7 to clear it up.

A yeast infection would be consistent with part of your symptoms especially since you just finished an antibiotic, but yeast does not usually produce an odor. A fishy odor is commonly found in trichomonas vaginal infections.
