After surgery i was given a morphine IV drip.........?

if i had no side effects to morphine in the IV drip, is it still possible that i would experience side effects if i took it in oral form like with MS-contin?

In a situation where you are receiving Morphine in an IV drip, it is a very, very low dose given over a longer time.
It is given directly into the bloodstream which delivers it straight to the pain receptors in the brain, meaning you don't need much.

When you take an oral Morphine drug such as MS Contin, it is in a much higher dose than given by IV, and it has to go through the stomach, liver, kidney's and blood stream. Kidney's are on the way out of course. So the potential for side effects and a stronger effect occuring are greater.

If you were to be given Morphine IV as a straight dose, say in the ER for severe pain, not in a drip, THEN you would suffer the side effects of the Morphine. Why? Because it is a much higher dose than the IV drip and similar to MS Contin, taken in one hit.

Yes, because in an iv form it goes directly into the bloodstream, but in pill form it has to pass through your stomach, and liver to be processed.

it really depends on how long you were on the drip for. As for MS contin it can be really easy to get addicted. Follow your doctors advice carefully but dont be afraid to take your medicaion. when you want to come off gradually decrease your doseage over a few weeks and you shouldn't experience any side effects.

Sure, you could have Gi side effects b/c it goes thru your stomach.

Yes I can take IV, but not oral

Not likely unless you are talking about morphine sulphate.
I have had 2 spine operations and have had the morphine drip both times with no problems but when I was given a Rx for morphine sulphate I itched myself to death and couldn't sleep.
I take 20mg. oxycodone and 10/500 hydrocodone every day with no adverse effects

You will not have a reaction of the oral med if you had it in an IV of morphine and didnt have a problem. If you were allergic to it you would have known it soon after the IV administration was given.
