When do doctors usually give iron infusions (shots or IVs) for Anemia?

My hg is at 9 right now. I am so dizzy and constantly tired. Ringing in the ears, shakyness/weakness, trouble concentrating, shortness of breath, paleness, you know, the whole nine yards. Anyways, I've heard people haveing to get blood transfusions at 7, and people still going about their daily lives with 5. I'm guessing it just depends on the person and how it affects them. The doctor started me on 325 mg iron, 3x daily. I hear it can take weeks for you to feel normal with the pills. I'm so weak I can hardly walk. I sleep about 13 hours or more a day now.

Since the doctor didn't send me to the hospital, despite me telling him how I can't funtion, should I go to the hospital anyways if I feel this bad? What will they do?

I hear iron IV's are dangerous. Anyone ever had one? At what number (hg) were you given one?

So, how can I cope with this when I can't really use my body for anything productive. I can hardly sit up to type this message.
Should i visit the ER?

First off, let me say that I totally feel for you. As for now, if you are that weak, I say get to the hospital now. Anemia is nothing to play with , so if you feel that crappy, you should really be treated. the lowest my hbg has been is 7.4, and i had NO idea that it was that low. Anyhow, it takes a while for your levels to get to normal. Increase your iron intake in your diet instead of just taking the pills. I hope this helps a little bit

You might have another problem as well. There might be something that is causing you hmg to fall and it may have fallen more since you saw your doctor. Please go to the ER and be seen at once and explain to them how you are feeling. This is not normal and it's a bit frightening. Good luck, sweetie. Better safe than sorry when it comes to your health.

  • Are pumps required for infusions through central lines?

No, not necessarily. In the olden days, there were no pumps, but central catheters were commonplace, too. I assume pumps are used mostly for reliable control of infusion rate and for safety.
