I have Multiple Myeloma and severe Osteoporosis. How rare is Necrosis of the jaw with IV injections REALLY?I?

I am 47 years old. I was diagnosed in December 2006. In Feb. 2007 I fell and broke my right wrist, my left elbow and a rib. I had a bone density test. I just went back to work but I'm still in pain. I'm taking Thalidamide and Decadron and my numbers have gone down which is good. I'm also in the rarer 20% with the high IgA. I'm very worried about Necrosis of the jaw if I get the IV injections for the bones once a month as my DR has advised.

Hi,

Great to hear you are doing well,

a new study came out (April) with information - Mayo .

It is on the IMF (www.myeloma.org) site but the statistics are less than 8% and that number is going down because people now know it is a problem and treat accordingly

My dentist and docs say that it is not a big deal; as long as you practice good dental hygiene. It looks like (study not concluded) that as long as you don't have serious dental work done, the risk is very small.

BUT - you need to read the study and make own decision; weight the +/- over not taking the infusion and having serious spine or leg collapse and ending up in a wheelchair.

One BIG change is that the study showed that the risk is higher with Zometa injections over longer infusion times of Pamidronate - practiacally same drug but you get dose over longer time so not as harsh.

good luck,

I too am 47 yrs old and I go in on Monday the 14th to see what my latest blood work is showing and if I have to get a bone marrow aspiration done. I have MGUS and my white blood count is doing very strange things. Does not appear to have progressed to multiple myeloma as of last test I had yet blood work is abnormal. Curious about jaw necrosis you mentioned . Have had some very unusual infections in my jaw after having a number of root canals done. Keeps getting infected and have had to have those teeth subsequently removed. still have pain in my jaw but just thought maybe I was tripping. Also have had two severe ear infections (Staph) in ear on side that is affected. Could this be related to the blood issues???????
