IV Injection Tips/How to get veins to show?

As a severe hemophiliac, I almost always have to take an effing IV injection. I've been visiting too often these days, and have just used up what could be the last visible/feelable vein in my arms. So I really, really need some IV tips, or tips on how to get my veins to show up well.

With that disease there is absolutely NO reason that you should be injecting yourself with anything! Once your veins are shot they are not suitable for use and other measures have to be taken that does require a medical license to perform. For good reason.

Keep yourself well hydrated. When looking for a vein, try wrapping your arm in a warm compress to encourage blood flow to that area. Also talk to your doctor about the possibility of a Port-a-cath. It's surgically inserted under the skin in the upper chest or in the arm and appears as a bump under the skin. The catheter runs from the portal and is surgically inserted into a vein (usually the jugular vein, subclavian vein, or superior vena cava.)

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear your veins are giving you trouble. You can apply warm compresses to your arms and of course flexing your hands can help "pump up" a vein to make it more visable. Also if you have a tourniquet don't put it too close to the site you are trying to hit, it can cause fragile veins to collapse. You could also review the anatomical locations of veins to know where to look, but I'm guessing you already know where they are. Best of luck to you.

before going in for the inj., take a hot shower (to dilate the vein), do some cardiovascular exercise and drink lots liquid. All these will increase the blood flow, making the vein easier to find. If these techniques don't work apply heat (ex hot water bottle) directly to the skin on your hands and behind the elbow.
