An IV Needle broke in my arm 3 months ago while in the hospital?

They found it in my shoulder in an x-ray. My doctor told me to set up an appointment for next week to see a surgeon. Can this wait. Should I go to a hospital. Everyone keeps telling me I should go to the hosptial.

i again agree with everyone who has told you to go to the hospital because a foreign obect in the can cause major problems the body could get sick from this , it could move into other places, think if its been three months and its broken off and traveld that fastly to your shoulder think of how fast it could travel somewhere else thats the upper region of your body i wouldn't mess with it go to a hospital immediatly , you should always go with your gut instinct and see a physican thanks and blessings cassandra

if the needle has already moved, it can continue it's journey. the end result will be a needle in your heart or brain. but, only you can decide if this is important.

Should have been removed the first time. Did they tell you about it?

If the needle is subcutaneous, and not actually in your blood vessel, then it is safe to wait and have the surgeon remove it.
If you went to the ER, they most likely would refer you to another surgeon (and not remove it then and there). You would just end up owing a big emergency room bill.

Wait a minute...an IV needle??

When an IV is inserted into a person's arm (or hand), the needle is NOT left in place. An IV is a needle with a plastic catheter over the needle. Once it has been inserted into the vein, the needle is removed, leaving the catheter in the vein. The catheter is flexible and that is what IV fluids or medications flow through. The needle is NOT left in the vein.

You need to be a little more specific.

If some sort of needle was left inside you, it should be removed. It is an infection risk.

Yes they are right. You should go...unless your health is not important to you. The needle broke in your arm...bad. Found it in your arm...worse. This meant that it travelled and will continue doing so and can cause more damage that you can imagine. So, if you still have apprehensions about setting an appointment with a surgeon, it is your call. But if I were you, i've long had it removed. Goodluck!
