IV's and veins...?

I have to go to the doctor on a regular basis to get IV medication and I am rather small( 5'3 95lbs). The problem is the nurses have hard time finding a vein and end up sticking me several times. As you can imagine this is painful and I need to know what can I do to make the veins larger? i have heard lots of water helps but how much? Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you

i too have this problem. try eating a good meal about an hour before your to have the iv and drink something on the way to the dr. there is nothing you can do to make veins bigger

If it is on a regular basis (the need for IV meds), I'd explore the option of a PICC line or a port.

cut the circulation off of your wrist for a few seconds...(not too long or you will end up having to cut your hand off) this should work.

Child, you can't make your any biggier that they are now. Even if you use medication to make them on a temporary basis get :wide". However if you don't get exited when the nurse is placeing the angio in your arm this helps. Also the nurse can use a butterfly angio which is smaller and can do the trick. Good luck .....

Drink water!!! Stay hydrated.

I have the one stick rule...you get one time to stick me and then I do it myself. (I don't advise you do it yourself as I have been trained to do so)

I am not sure a PICC line or a port would be an option for you, but it is definitely one I would explore with my physician because you as a patient have the right to at least the minimal amount of comfort possible during any procedure.

Also you have the right to demand someone else stick you if everyone else seems to find it difficult. If you do in fact find an employee within the office that can stick you properly you could ask that whenever you are scheduled for this procedure that this person be the one to administer it.

I don't know how much that helps but hopefully it helped a bit.

put heat on it before the stick..it will open it up, cold will constrict it.

Drink plenty of water which will plump up your blood vessels. Then, as long as the nurse or tech can feel the vein, he or she should be able to get into it - even if it is narrow.

no. because IV is an abbreviation so they would use the roman word for the unabbreviated word.
