I had food poisoning and was given an iv? |
I was severely dehydrated, so the nurse pumped up the pressure of the iv, I immediately felt one of the worst pains I've ever had go through my hand and arm. That was over a year ago. Sometimes I still get a pain in my hand where that iv was. Is that normal for nurses or doctors to pump an iv through someone that hard? I told her it hurt really bad and she didn't seem alarmed. Could it have caused permanent damage? Is is not uncommon to recieve IV fluid after being diagnosed with food poisioning especially if you have been having diarhea and vomitting. Sometimes IV's are puhed though rather quickly, but usually in emergency siutations. You should not have had such serious pain when the fluid was going though. Your IV was most likely inflitrated. Inflitration usually occurs from improper cannula size or excessive delivery rate of the fluid (which seems that was the case with you). The nurse should have immediatle discontinued the fluids, removed the IV, elevation your area and gave you a warm compress. I don't think you could have permanent damage, but you may want to speak with your PCP to be sure. I start nothing; I only react to bad intentioned attacks. |
