What possibly caused the death of the baby? |
The baby brought to hospital was having a fever, diarrhea and cough, he was also experiencing convulsions. The doctor said that the baby was dehydrated so the baby undergone IV therapy. The baby consume 2000 ml of IV fluid within 4 hours duration approximately but unfortunately the baby died in less than 24 hours. But what made me think was the appearance of the baby now, he is edematous almost the entire body and having bruises or dark spots like a blood clots in his body. Is it suggestive that the caused of the death was fluid overload? Or what could be the other possible reasons for his death and why is it that he was having an edema? Sounds like fluid overload to me as I can't imagine a baby being given that much IV solution in that short of a time. I could be dead wrong though. I know this sounds ridiculous but find a lawyer who specializes in medical malpractice and tell them about what happened. Ask him to find out what happened and why the baby suffered from fluid overload. seems way to extreme and overload for such a short duration of time to me give the circumstances Could have been dehydrated from the diahrea from what source who knows then sepsis may have set in . If they do an autopsy the findings will be there. Unfortunately when kids are sick they will remain on a plateau for a while and seem ok and then the bottom drops out, at that point it becomes life or death unlike adults who when sick have a definite sloping decline. Its a horrible thing and why it is most important to really pay attention with kids. The average fluid intake for an infant is somewhere between 100-200(max)cc/kg/day. Usually, fluid boluses are 10ml/kg with reevaluation of hematocrit/hemoglobin, aterial blood gas, and blood chemistries to make sure that fluid balance is appropriate. 2000mL of IV fluid in 4 hours equals 500mL per hour. If this is correct information then that child experienced fluid overload. |
