IV site swelling? |
I am 37 weeks preg. Yesterday went into hospital with contracts 3 min apart. I was given IV therapy because they thought I was dehydrated. The tried to run the line first through my arm, but missed the vein and then put into my left hand. That didn't stop the contractions and then they gave me an anti-nausea med through the IV. It burned really bad and could feel it up to my second knuckles in my hand. Was dc'd and slept until this morning. When I woke up I realized that my hand is swollen (typing isn't easy). Calling dr when they open, but is it normal to have swelling after an IV? I've never had this happen before and I don't have any allergies? Whaat happend is your IV infiltrated. The fluid from the IV went into your hand surrounding the vein. You should be fine and the swelling should go down but I would still call the doctor and let them know that this is going on. It has nothing to do with allergies or anything like that. You can have swelling if the IV slips ou of the vein and the fluid goes into the tissue. It takes a while to be absorbed into the body but is not a big deal! They may have infiltrated ( went all the way through both sides) your vein well probably when women are pregnant they are a lot more sensitive to anything that is taken inside the body...it is normal for a person to have a swelling but it takes weeks before the hand starts to swell from the IV...but in your case, coz you are pregnant, it may be possible, so just relax coz its natural... :) Usually a swelling like you describe means that the IV was not in the vein and the solution went into the tissue. It will gradually go away as it is absorbed but it is still a good idea to call your Dr. to be sure. I do not know what meds they gave you but your Dr. will know. Is the puncture site discolored (purple, dark red not normal to skin irritation)? If it is, it could be infection. If not, then it could be a fluid buildup from when the IV was removed. I suggest you put some neosporin on it, and call your doctor like you planned. |
