Why does the government allow pharmaceuticals companies to advertise products that will give us worse effects?

There is no real right answer I guess. But it is nice to know what you all think about the whole thing. I wouldn't want to take something for Allergies if I had to put up with cramps, headachs, rashes etc....... Would you?

Why do we think that the "Government" should be an all knowing big brother/ patron figure? We live in a capatlist country- businesses, even pharmaceuticals, can do what they wish to try to make a buck. The Goverment attempts to regulate drug companies, certain things are illegal, drugs undergo extensive testing to get FDA approval. Not all drugs are good for you, but it is up to the individual user to research the possible side effects of any particular thing they need to take and know that advertisingis just thst- a way to convince people to buy your product. It's all about money. As soon as the gov't gets involved in limiting advertising, there are going to be even more allegations of corruption.

FDA. Foods that cause health problems (any hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, aspertane, processed carbs), Drugs that treat them, not cure them, then the FDA bureaucrats get great job offers from law firms defending Big Pharma.

I think you are talking about the side effects that are listed during commercials advertising a particular pharmaceutical product. The government requires these side effects to be listed so that the consumer is informed. You have to remember there are major and minor side effects, and not every person experiences side effects. Every medication has some side effect.

I don't think there is any conspiracy to harm your health. No two people are exactly alike, and different people have different reactions to medication. This isn't experimentation, or the government trying to make money (I'd argue the fewer side effects the more money the pharm company will make, because physicians would choose a medication more patients would be happy with), or even GW Bush's fault (he's at fault for alot of things, but this isn't one of them).

I'd also argue that having a headache and a rash because of a medication is better than having a blood pressure that's dangerously high or being dead wouldn't you?
