How should pharmacies dispose of their patients' excess medications? |
Patients are being advised not to flush extra medications or throw them away because they can leech into the groundwater. Instead they are being told to return them to the pharmacy. I work in a pharmacy, and we take back patients' extra medications, but we really don't know how to dispose of them. What is the best way to dispose of them? Most pharmacies dispose of meds that are uncontrolled by the old fashioned way of flushing them. As you know, controlled substances need to be recorded and documented if wasted. Some places grind them up prior to flushing them. Good luck |
