How do prescriptions and insurance work when i move?

I will be moving soon. I have 2 prescriptions but will be quitting my job making my insurance end right? How long will my insurance be good? 30 days? 90 days? Can the new state fill my current prescription? but if my insurance runs out then i pay full price? It might take me a while to find a new job.

You will have to find out from your job now how long they will cover you before you will need to get Cobra or another insurance. Go to your doctor and get prescriptions for those two medications and see if you can fill them before you move that way you have them. Your new state will be able to fill those prescriptions if you don't get them filled in your recent state. I moved from NY to NC and I took a NY prescription to a NC pharmacy and didn't have any problems.

If your insurance from your previous job "runs out" then you should look into getting additional coverage. Also, be careful when you get a new job, sometimes the insurance doesn't kick in until you've been working there for 3 months.

Good Luck to you!

Check with your HR person, you should be able to get COBRA to cover you for the time. (It's pretty much your same plan as you have now, but you pay the full price and sometimes admin fees.) You can get that for up to 18 months. Otherwise, your insurance probably will cut you off either on your last day of work or at the end of the month - depending on what your company tells it to do.

As for prescriptions - if they've been filled by a national pharmacy, like Walgreens, you should be able to transfer them right to the new one. Otherwise, I would ask your current doctor for a new written one to take to a new pharmacy, and fill one right before you move to tide you over until you find a new pharmacy.

Good luck!
